Отношение средней квадратической мощности сигнала заданной частоты при заданных условиях записи к средней квадратической мощности шума в заданной полосе частот, полученное при воспроизведении оптической сигналограммы, выраженное в децибелах.

Квадрат отношения среднеквадратичного значения напряжения высокочастотной несущей при цифровой модуляции к среднеквадратичному значению напряжения непрерывного случайного шума в определенной ширине полосы частот измерения. (Если отсутствует явное описание, тогда ширина полосы частот измерения берется равной (числено) скорости передачи символов при цифровой модуляции.) Для цифровой модуляции, CNR = E/N, отношение «энергии на символ» к «плотности шума»; мощность сигнала измеряется в занимаемом диапазоне, а мощность шума нормализована по отношению к частоте модуляции диапазона. Для видеосигнала диапазон измерений составляет 4 МГц (МСЭ-R F.1499).
